Stari Slankamen
Stari Slankamen is located on the border of Bačka, Banat, and Srem, along the Danube River, at the foot of the branches of Fruška Gora, halfway between Belgrade and Novi Sad. Its name comes from the rock from which salty water springs. The settlement of Stari Slankamen dates back to prehistoric times and played a significant historical and geographical role.
Slankamen served as one of the strongholds of the Roman army in the Balkans, where they built a fortress that the Turks later used. A very important battle between Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire took place in the Slankamen area in 1691, where a monument was erected to commemorate the fallen Serbian fighters. Slankamen Spa is the oldest spa in Vojvodina, known for its healing waters, which gave Slankamen its name.
